Don't Panic, Diagnose!
A broken washing machine can quickly cause a pileup of laundry and stress. However, 80% of washing machine malfunctions are caused by simple blockages or minor part failures that you can fix yourself for a fraction of the cost of a service call.
Issue: The Machine Won't Drain
This is the most common issue, often resulting in an error code (like OE on LG or 5C on Samsung). The culprit is almost always the drain pump filter. Located at the bottom front of most front-load washers, this filter catches coins, hairpins, and lint.
- Place a towel and a shallow dish under the small access door.
- Unplug the small drain hose and drain the excess water.
- Unscrew the filter counter-clockwise, pull it out, and clean off the debris. Rinse it under the sink and put it back.
Issue: Violent Shaking During the Spin Cycle
If your washer sounds like a jet engine taking off, it is unbalanced.
- First, check the feet. Use a bubble level on top of the machine and adjust the threaded feet until the machine rests completely flat and doesn't rock.
- If the machine is level but still shakes, the suspension rods (top-loaders) or shock absorbers (front-loaders) may be worn out and require replacement. These parts are cheap and typically only require a socket set to change.
Issue: Clothes Come Out Smelling Musty
Front-load washers are notorious for mold buildup in the rubber door gasket. Wipe down the gasket (including inside the folds) with a bleach solution or white vinegar. Always leave the door propped open after a wash to allow the interior to dry completely.
