When Your TV Acts Up
Modern TVs are complex, but many issues have simple fixes. Before calling a technician, try these diagnostic steps and repairs.
Sound But No Picture
If you hear audio but see a black screen, the backlight has likely failed. Shine a flashlight at the screen—if you see a faint image, the panel works but the LEDs do not. LED and QLED TVs use backlight strips; replacement is possible but requires careful disassembly. OLED TVs do not have a separate backlight.
TV Won't Turn On
Check the power cable and outlet first. If the standby LED does not light, the power board has likely failed. Bulging capacitors are a common cause—they can be replaced if you are comfortable with soldering. Otherwise, replace the entire power board.
HDMI Port Not Working
Try a different cable and port. One bad port does not mean the TV is dead—use another. Bent pins can sometimes be straightened. Replacing an HDMI port requires soldering skill and the correct replacement part.
Screen Flickering
Flickering can come from a loose cable, incompatible refresh rate, or failing backlight. Try a different HDMI cable. Adjust the refresh rate in your source device. If the flickering persists, the T-con board or backlight may be failing.
