Breathe New Life into Your Phone
Modern smartphone batteries (Lithium-ion) naturally degrade after 500 charge cycles, usually translating to about 2 years of use. Instead of spending $1,000 on a new phone, a $30 battery replacement can restore your device to peak performance.
Preparation and Safety
Lithium-ion batteries are volatile. Before starting, drain your phone battery below 25%. A charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire if accidentally punctured during repair.
The General Process
- Heating the Adhesive: Most modern phones are glued shut for water resistance. Use a heat gun or an iOpener to soften the adhesive around the edges of the back glass or screen.
- Slicing the Seal: Use a suction cup and guitar picks to carefully slice through the waterproof adhesive. Take your time to avoid cracking the glass.
- Disconnecting the Battery: Once inside, always disconnect the battery cable first before touching any other interior components to prevent short circuits.
- Removing the Old Battery: Pull the adhesive stretch-release tabs from under the battery. If your phone doesn't have these, use isopropyl alcohol (90%+) to dissolve the glue. Never pry a battery with a sharp metal tool.
Reassembly
Apply new adhesive strips, plug the new battery in, and seal the phone. Always test the phone's charging capability before applying the final waterproof seal.
