Get More Years From Your Tools
Power tools are an investment. Simple maintenance can double or triple their lifespan.
Carbon Brush Replacement
Brushes are consumable—they wear down as they contact the commutator. When they are too short, the motor stops. Most drills have brush access ports on the sides. Remove the old brushes and slide in the new ones. Match the part number to your model.
Chuck Replacement
A worn chuck causes bits to slip. Replacement is straightforward: open the chuck fully and look for a screw in the bottom (it may be reverse-thread). Remove the screw, then use an allen key in the chuck to unscrew it from the spindle. Install the new chuck and tighten the screw.
Battery Care
Store cordless tool batteries at 40-60% charge. Avoid leaving them on the charger indefinitely. Heat kills batteries—do not leave them in a hot car. If a pack fails, it can sometimes be rebuilt with new cells, or replaced with an aftermarket unit.
Trigger and Switch Issues
Variable speed triggers can fail. The switch module is usually replaceable. Disconnect the battery, open the tool, and swap the switch. Match the part number—triggers are model-specific.
