Extend the Life of Your Console

Gaming consoles are expensive. With basic tools and care, you can fix many common issues yourself.

Overheating - PS5 and Xbox Series X

Dust is the main culprit. Open the console (voids warranty) and use compressed air on the fan and heatsink. Replace thermal paste on the APU for severe cases. Ensure the console has plenty of ventilation—do not place it in an enclosed cabinet.

Disc Drive Not Reading

Try cleaning the disc and lens. If that fails, the drive may need replacement. Note: PlayStation and Xbox disc drives are paired to the motherboard. A replacement drive from another unit may not work without professional pairing.

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Drift

Joy-Con drift is extremely common. The analog stick module can be replaced—it is a drop-in unit. Cleaning with contact cleaner can provide temporary relief. Replacement modules are available online. You will need a tri-wing screwdriver to open the Joy-Con.

Power Supply Issues

If the console does not power on, test the outlet and cable first. The internal power supply can fail—replacement requires full disassembly. For the Xbox Series S and X, the PSU is integrated.
