Why Dishwashers Stop Draining

Drainage failures are among the most common dishwasher issues. The cause is usually a clogged filter, blocked drain hose, or failed drain pump.

Step 1: Check the Filter

Most dishwashers have a filter at the bottom of the tub. Twist or lift it out. Rinse it under running water and scrub away food debris. A clogged filter prevents water from reaching the drain pump. Clean it every few weeks to prevent buildup.

Step 2: Inspect the Drain Hose

The drain hose runs from the dishwasher to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Ensure it is not kinked. Disconnect it and check for blockages. Run water through it to flush debris. If the hose connects to a garbage disposal, ensure the knockout plug was removed when the disposal was installed.

Step 3: Test the Drain Pump

If the filter and hose are clear, the drain pump may have failed. The pump is usually at the bottom of the tub. Listen for a humming sound when the drain cycle runs—humming without draining suggests a jammed impeller. Remove the pump and clear any debris. If the pump does not run at all, test it with a multimeter. Replace if it has failed.

Step 4: Check the Air Gap

Some installations use an air gap on the counter. If it is clogged, water cannot drain. Remove the cap and clean the air gap. Run water through it to verify it is clear.
